We are excited to share Taylor’s recent publication in PLOS Genetics! In this study, epithelium cells respond to tissue mechanics differently and this regulation is very important for maintaining the structure of the small intestine and their physiology roles. Sophia is a new graduate student from Cell and Molecular Biology PhD program. She completed her undergraduate studies in biology and physics at the University of Virginia. Sophia has a deep passion for cell signaling and is fascinated by how cells transmit information from the outside to the inside. We are so excited to have her join our lab!

The Lechler lab had a wonderful time at the 2022 ASCB (the American Society for Cell Biology). Dan and Ale had their work presented by posters, and Dan gave a talk about the roles of desmosomes in translational regulation. It is always exciting to share our work with others, learn something new in science, and meet old faces!

The Lechler lab had a great time last week at the 2022 Duke Cell Biology Department Retreat. Dan and Maggie both gave great talks about their research. Taylor and Mike had poster presentations. No one will forget the beautiful night at Asheville, with great food, wonderful people and science!
 
We had a productive week. Right after the Cell Bio Retreat, the lab members attended the Dermatology Annual Research Symposium. Terry gave a talk sharing the lab’s work on how desmosome regulates protein translation. We all had a great time at the Duke Dermatology homecoming celebration party.

First, Mike received a T32 training grant to support his work investigating the transcriptional regulation and mechanisms of nutrient uptake in the neonatal intestine.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Mike Scales to the Lechler Lab. Mike is returning to North Carolina where he lived briefly as a child, though many of his formative years were spent in California. Mike’s wife, Michelle, and children, Scott and Ellie, relocated with him to Durham. He graduated from University of California, Davis with high honors and received a degree in Genetics. From there, he moved to University of Michigan where he completed his PhD investigating the role of Hedgehog signaling in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma where he was jointly mentored by Dr. Benjamin Allen and Dr. Marina Pasca di Magliano. Welcome, Mike!
